Federal Interagency Committee on Aviation Noise FICAN Position on Research into Effects of Aircraft Noise on Classroom Learning

چکیده

Research on the effects of aircraft noise on children’s learning suggests that aircraft noise can interfere with learning in the following areas: reading, motivation, language and speech acquisition, and memory. The strongest findings to date are in the area of reading, where more than 20 studies have shown that children in noise impact zones are negatively affected by aircraft. Recent research confirms conclusions from studies in the 1970s showing a decrement of reading when outdoor noise levels are at an Leq of 65 dB or higher. It is also possible that, for a given level of Leq, the effects of aircraft noise on classroom learning may be greater than the effects of road and railroad traffic.

Effects of Aviation Noise on Awakenings from Sleep

FICAN recommends the adoption of a new dose-response curve for predicting awakening, based on the field data described in this paper and supporting references. The Committee takes the conservative position that, because the adopted curve represents the upper limit of the data presented, it should be interpreted as predicting the "maximum percent of the exposed population expected to be behavior...

Aviation Noise Impacts: State of the Science

Noise is defined as "unwanted sound." Aircraft noise is one, if not the most detrimental environmental effect of aviation. It can cause community annoyance, disrupt sleep, adversely affect academic performance of children, and could increase the risk for cardiovascular disease of people living in the vicinity of airports. In some airports, noise constrains air traffic growth. This consensus pap...

On the CO2 and noise emissions forecast in future aviation scenarios in the UK

Aircraft operations have a significant impact on local air quality, climate change, fuel consumption and noise around airports. In order to reach emission targets set by aviation agencies (e.g. ACARE), to reduce environmental impact and to ensure a sustainable future of the sector, the aviation industry is continuously investing in research and development of technologies for reducing CO2, nois...

The effects of traffic noise on memory and auditory-verbal learning in Persian language children

Background: Acoustic noise is one of the universal pollutants of modern society. Although the high level of noise adverse effects on human hearing has been known for many years, non-auditory effects of noise such as effects on cognition, learning, memory and reading, especially on children, have been less considered. Factors which have negative impact on these features can also have a negat...

Noise Effects on Modal Parameters Extraction of Horizontal Tailplane by Singular Value Decomposition Method Based on Output Only Modal Analysis

According to the great importance of safety in aerospace industries, identification of dynamic parameters of related equipment by experimental tests in operating conditions has been in focus. Due to the existence of noise sources in these conditions the probability of fault occurrence may increases. This study investigates the effects of noise in the process of modal parameters identification b...
